Love calls us to be our spouse’s biggest cheerleader. However, the things we should be celebrating and encouraging in them are godly behavior, obedience to God’s word, love for His people. The world pulls and tugs at us and encourages us to run in all kinds of different directions. Ungodly influences are all around us. We turn on the tv and can be easily distracted by immoral programs, slanderous talk shows, and lures to buy more and more unnecessary things we didn’t know we “needed”. But as children of God, we can make the choice to guard our hearts and minds, and eyes, from the things that distract us from living a holy life. So when we see our spouse making the choice to give to someone who is in financial need, instead of buying that new and shiny ….., we can celebrate with them for their selflessness. When a husband sees his wife ignoring the gossip of her friends directed toward another acquaintance, he can celebrate with her for her choice to not listen to slander, but to guard her heart and ears, and choose to believe the best of her friend. Making godly choices in this world isn’t east, and matey make us feel left out and alone. But to have the one person who is closest to us encourage us and pray with us, it makes all the difference.
1 Corinthians 13:6 “Love is never happy when others do wrong, but it is always happy with the truth.”
2 Thessalonians 1:3-4 “We thank God for you always. And that’s what we should do, because you give us good reason to be thankful: Your faith is growing more and more. And the love that every one of you has for each other is also growing. So we tell the other churches of God how proud we are of you. We tell them how you patiently continue to be strong and have faith, even though you are being persecuted and are suffering many troubles.”
3 John 1:4 “It always gives me the greatest joy when I hear that my children are following the way of truth.”
Romans 16:19 “Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice because of you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.”
CHALLENGE: Praise your spouse for something they did recently that was God-honoring.
