The closest relationship we will ever have is with our spouse. No one knows us as well as they do. Which means that they are capable of expressing the most intimate love we can ever experience. They are also capable of hurting us in ways far worse than anyone else. Our home should be a place of safety where we feel secure and unafraid to be vulnerable. 1 John 4:18 says “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear”.
Marriage is compared to our relationship with God. He knows us better than anyone because He created us. Psalm 139:1-4 “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.” And even with this knowledge, He chooses to love us unconditionally. So we too should extend this same love and grace to our spouse.
CHALLENGE: Guard your spouse’s secrets. Demonstrate love to them in spite of these issues. Listen intently when they share personal thoughts or struggles, and pray for them.
