I once heard someone say that to love out of our own strength isn’t enough. We fall way short of giving perfect love. Our anger, pride, and selfishness get in the way of extending grace and forgiveness. That is why we need God’s perfect love moving through us. Agape love isn’t based on human emotions or capabilities. It is God loving through us in ways that only He can. Romans 3:23 says that we have all fallen short of God’s commands. We are sinners. But we are not to let that fact get in the way of surrendering our will to God. It’s not easy to love in the heat of an argument, or when hurtful words come our way. But to hold onto bitterness and unforgiveness only hinders God’s agape love from reaching the other person. If we are not right with God, we can’t truly love our spouse.
Romans 6:23 “You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”
1 John 4:7 says “Love is from God”. And John 15:5, Jesus said “Apart from Me you and do nothing”. We are to stay connected to Him, the vine, so that the fruit of love grows in us. We are to “abide in Him”, John 15:7. If God is dwelling in our hearts, we will “know the love of Christ which passes knowledge” and we will be “filled with all the fullness of God”.
Only God can do this. We are completely incapable of loving with forgiveness and unselfish pride without Him.
Ephesians 3:20 ” He is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us”. This is agape love; this is how we are to love.
CHALLENGE: Look back over the previous dares. Which seemed impossible to you? Have you realized your need for God to change your heart and give you the ability to love? Ask Him to show you where you stand with Him, and ask for the strength and grace to settle your eternal destination.
