Prayer. It’s one of the most powerful tools available to us as believers. And when we join with someone, especially our spouse, we are adding to that power. The unity that grows between a husband and wife who pray together regularly forms an intense and powerful connection. 1 Peter 3:7 “Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” Jesus promise to be in our midst when we pray together. Matthew 18:20 ” ‘For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.’ ”
Prayer is part of God’s protection for us. This verse found in Ephesians after the Armor of God, Ephesians 6:18 “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Prayer is a weapon we can use against the enemy. Praying for our spouse wards off enemies that would seek to destroy our marriage.
(Have you see Warroom? It’s a powerful movie staring Priscilla Shirer about the importance of regular, consistent prayer.)
Prayer not only can change our outward circumstances, but it will also move our hearts to be changed. We may not feel very loving toward our spouse after a heated argument, but through prayer, our attitude can be redirected to loving them, and showing them grace, and forgiveness.
CHALLENGE: Try praying together with your spouse. Choose a time that works best in your schedules. Commit to praying regularly together and by yourself. Let prayer become one of your most precious parts of the day.
