As we close our study in the pursuit of living a holy life, we end with living a life filled with joy. A joyful life comes only from walking in union with God. Our union is kept intact through living a holy life. Not a sinless life (that is not possible this side of Heaven), but staying right before our Father, confessing sin when we are aware of it.
John 15:10-11 “If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” Our joy results from obeying His commands.
Through joy we have fellowship with God. Psalm 16:11 “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” When we sin, our joy is gone because we are not in fellowship with God. Psalm 51:12 “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” How much we experience God’s joy is dependent on how obedient we are living.
As Christians, we also experience the joy of anticipating our reward in Heaven. Hebrews 12:1-2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Just as Jesus focused on the joy before Him, we should also fix our eyes on our eternal reward waiting for us in Heaven.
